Feeling that her kitchen diner had become tired and dated, interior designer Naomi Isted wanted to give the room a fresh update. With the units still in good condition, Naomi chose to make small changes that would have a big impact.
Naomi explained: “Subtle changes can completely upgrade a space! I personally like to think as sustainably as possible in all my designs so I felt that with this project we could retain a large portion of the kitchen frames and cabinetry. I also wanted to include the very latest in kitchen products to make our family life as easy as possible.”
Sleek lines and natural vibes
The existing kitchen featured an uncluttered minimalist style with pale grey units and white walls which the Isted family find practical and calming. However, to prevent the overall effect feeling cold Naomi has introduced materials with tonal variation and texture to give a cosy atmosphere.
Floor installed: LooseLay Palmaria
Opting for warm rose gold to accessorise against the cool grey, Naomi has elevated her kitchen with new handles, kickboards and a marble effect worksurface and matching splashback, creating an uninterrupted flow and clean contemporary look.
Keen to make the most of the latest kitchen technology, some of the units were replaced to house a range of smart appliances, including an integrated microwave, coffee machine, steam oven and a wine fridge. By choosing similarly streamlined units in a coordinating off-white colour, Naomi has balanced the open plan space and added character as well as much needed storage.
When it came to update the worn floor tiles, she knew a wood design luxury vinyl floor would add a natural quality that’s comfortable underfoot and easy to keep hygienically clean.
Naomi said: “We wanted to create a beautiful aesthetic in the kitchen but at the same time wanted a practical floor that could stand up to our busy family life.”
Easy-fit flooring that’s big on style
The Palio LooseLay range offered the perfect solution: a natural wood look that would add warmth and elegance yet also be simple to maintain.
The Isteds chose Palmaria, with its pinky tones, subtle whitewashed finish and beautifully authentic knots and grain details, and decided to fit the planks in a herringbone pattern. This has introduced a sense of movement to the sleek lines of the kitchen, adding character and natural harmony.
Naomi added: “Initially we were concerned about laying the herringbone pattern but it wasn’t complicated at all. After laying a levelling screed, it took us just a day and a half to install the entire floor and we were so shocked at how easy it was to cut and fit.”
A kitchen perfect for family life
“We adore our updated kitchen! The floor looks amazing and is so simple to keep clean, which is such a boon with two lively children and two boisterous dogs around. We love the style, finish and practicality of Palio Express flooring so much we decided to lay it in three other rooms too and we’re recommending it to all our clients.”
