After living in their 1930s London home for 16 years, Mary Walker-Harrod and her husband Paul decided to take the plunge with a top-to-bottom transformation, including a loft conversion to create a master bedroom where they could escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Floor installed: Korlok Baltic Washed Oak

Mary told us: “I didn’t have a particular theme in mind for our bedroom so I decided to make the bed the starting point. I knew I wanted to create a peaceful, light and airy space, as a loft room should be, so I opted for a blend of Scandi style to complement the rest of the house and a French country feel to suit the Louis XIV style rattan bed.

“I love to include vintage pieces and personal items that mean a lot to me so an old well-loved leather tub chair, antique gold mirrors and some prints that remind us of wonderful holidays have all found their way into this bedroom. Combined with soft neutral grey walls and a few black accents against crisp white linen, the result is relaxed with a luxury boutique hotel feel to it all.”

The many benefits of Korlok

The Korlok range offers a beautiful collection of wood and stone effect designs that fit together using a familiar drop and lock mechanism. Its rigid core construction made this an ideal choice to fit over the existing floorboards while an acoustic backing reduces sound transfer to rooms below by 21dB.

Mary explained why they opted for Korlok: “We chose Baltic Washed Oak as its Scandi design, grey undertones and textured finish perfectly complemented our shabby chic style. We liked its faded grey colourway and how close it looks to real wood flooring. The fact that it’s also straight forward to install was simply the final tick in the box!

“The Korlok floor is a huge improvement on the previous laminate flooring. It doesn’t move at all and the integrated acoustic layer means there is substantial noise reduction. It really is super easy to keep clean and it looks smart all the time, even in the kids’ rooms and in a house with pets.

“In fact, we loved the result so much that we decided to take the same flooring through all the other bedrooms for continuity throughout our home. We knew it would work well against the white built-in storage and plantation shutters in our guest room and the dark grey in our daughter’s bedroom, as well as complementing the grey carpet in the hallway.”

Mary’s top tips for installing Korlok

“We were impressed that Korlok was so painless to fit. We found it light to handle and easy to cut with a utility knife and steel rule. To cut each plank to size we simply scored the surface, bent it to snap and used the knife to complete the cut. Then it was a simple task to click the plank into position and tap to secure it in place.

“Here are my top tips for a seamless finish:

✓ Use a quality utility knife with a good grip

✓ Change the knife blade regularly

✓Get a better fit by marking the previous board alongside where you need to cut for the next row

✓Take a template from the existing flooring for difficult corners and around door frames.”
